CNN —Actor Eric McCormack has weighed in on the debate around whether non-LGBT actors should be able to play gay characters. McCormack, who is straight but is best known for playing gay lawyer Will Truman in the NBC comedy series “Will & Grace,” said in an interview on British television Monday that he still hopes “the best person for the role” would be cast, regardless of their sexuality. Susanna Reid, a co-host on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” show, asked McCormack what he thought about straight actors playing gay characters. McCormack and "Will & Grace" co-star Debra Messing in June 2023 Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images“That’s a tough one for me, because I didn’t become an actor so that I could play an actor,” said McCormack. It’s part of the gig.”“And I’ve always said: ‘If gay actors weren’t allowed to play straight actors, Broadway would be over,’” he added.

CNN —A BBC presenter has been told by the corporation that a comment he made toward a female Australian cricketer was “not appropriate” after he called her a “little Barbie” during a match interview earlier this week. Presenter Chris Hughes made the comment to Maitlan Brown on Tuesday after the sportswoman said her Southern Brave team had bonded by playing a practice game and going to the cinema to see the “Barbie” movie. Maitlan Brown played for the Sixers during the Women's Big Bash League in November last year. LBC presenter Nick Ferrari said that Hughes is “young enough to know better,” while one Twitter user commented: “Had to rewind to check id heard it right. Took a while to go back a few decades but yep, there it was (sic).”CNN has reached out to Hughes’ representatives for comment.

A British man has been banned from teaching for numerous breaches of the Teachers’ Standards code, a Department for Education (DfE) panel report shows, contrary to claims that Joshua Sutcliffe was banned only for using the wrong pronoun when addressing a transgender male pupil. One Facebook user (here) wrote: “So a teacher has been ‘banned’ from HIS profession, simply because HE ‘misgendered’ a student (is it ok to say student?). All the maths teacher did was praise a group of pupils by saying: 'Well done girls'.”Similar posts can be seen here and here. “His conduct... demonstrated a failure to treat pupils with dignity and/or respect and/or a failure to safeguard pupils’ well-being,” the panel added. Joshua Sutcliffe was banned from teaching for numerous reasons, which included, but was not limited to, his misgendering a pupil.

A satirical headline saying British actor Adjoa Andoh is appalled at the singular ethnicity of the Japanese royal family has been taken seriously online. The screenshot of a fabricated headline attributed to The Guardian was shared following Andoh’s May 6 comments about the lack of diversity on display upon the Buckingham Palace balcony at King Charles III’s coronation. However, the earliest version of the fabricated screenshot online was posted by a satirical account on Twitter (here), which states in its bio that it posts “spicy satire”. It is totally fake” and referred to a statement by Andoh explaining the context of her original remark. The fabricated headline originates from a satirical Twitter account.
CNN —The Church of England has changed the wording of its invitation to the public to pledge allegiance to King Charles during his coronation, following a public backlash. The Archbishop of Canterbury will now give people the option of saying just “God save King Charles” rather than making the full pledge of allegiance. The move follows widespread criticism of the proposed pledge. So help me God.”In a previous version of the text, published in April, the archbishop was to “call upon all persons of goodwill in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other realms and the territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted king, defender of all.”The earlier version had been described as “ill-advised” by a prominent friend of the King. Sign up for CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on the royal family, what they are up to in public and what’s happening behind palace walls.
In a break with tradition, the public will be invited to pledge allegiance to King Charles III during the coronation ceremony on Saturday May 6. While many Brits I’ve spoken to are simply indifferent to the proposed pledge, there has also been an unprecedent degree of public vitriol over the scheme. Yet, objections to the proposed pledge are as much about its content as its form. The proposed coronation pledge, in contrast, invites Britons to pledge their loyalty to the King, and to his “heirs and successors” – a positively undemocratic pronouncement. That complexity cannot simply be smoothed away by inviting people to pledge allegiance to the crown.
Sharon Osbourne was hospitalized Friday evening in California following "an unspecified medical emergency," according to the Santa Paula Police Department. The medical emergency was "non-life threatening," a source familiar with the matter told NBC News. “I am with you,” Osbourne tweeted in support of Morgan following the interview. Osbourne also recently spoke out about the new Harry & Meghan docuseries while on Morgan's Talk TV show, "Piers Morgan Uncensored." “I was totally bored by the whining, the whining, the whining."
